I think in needs to be gutted then full caged. 9" rear, power glide, and 360CI with a big single turbo. That would get you to the pavilions quicker.

Naturally aspirated around 400hp and then maybe a Turbo down the road or a whipple.. Budget right now is around $5000.. I really want driva-ability to be the number 1 but also like to go faster!!!!

Naturally aspirated, 400 Hp, drivablity #1 priority, for around $5000. Defintly look at a 351 (Emissions won't be a problem with the Car registered in PA), or maybe a 347 stroker (Would fool alot of people, and be a torque monster!). Cylinder heads, get expen$ive fa$t, might find a good set at a reasonable price online!

Take a good look at crate motors Dave. You get a good good motor, at a good price. You are not into drag racing, one should fit your needs. There are a lot of reputable builders out there that could fulfill your needs, at a good price.

Would the $5000 include driveline upgrades? Remember drivablity! No fun sitting on the side of the road with a trashed transmission, or burned up clutch! Ford just listed a new T-5 in the Motorsports Catalog that is rated at 330 lbs of torque. Easy enough to build up a 8.8 rear end to hold up to the task.

Think I may have opened up a new can of worms here!

What is the latest word from your Brother on the 79' Pace Car?

Yeah, heads and trans are going to be the big ticket items, I def. want reliability in there not some monster I cant cruise to Flagg and Cali

Turbo Diesel sounds Like fun!! I don't know of anything like that around.

The Pace Car.. All panels are stiprred and ready for primer/Block/sand but the temps in Pittsburgh have been single digit and Dennis doesn't want to paint until it warms up a bit. The interior problems have resolved themselves!! found like new Haols and material for the seats. Huge!
All new bushings, shocks/struts and the TRX Wheels have been sent out for refinishing. I am placing a big order with laurel Mountain this week, they are just dwon the pike from my brothers shop!

One down, got the gears from Roush on ebay brand new 3:73 r/p $75.00. Going to put them in first while the car is still mobile. Crate motors look good but I want to get my hands dirty!!

347 (9.1) For future boost
AFR 185s
Custom Hydro Roller Cam (Jay Allen)
Holley Sys 2 Int

Setup should do 330ish rw (close to your 400hp goal) and with some boost the car would come unglued.

If you want to save some coin do TFS TW heads.

Thanks for the info! How would this be for cruising long trips like to cali? Not to concerned with fuel miles but just running and reliability?

Dont go to radical on the cam and it would be fine!

Mark S. drove his car to Cali multiple times with a much meaner setup than this.
342 (10.5)
AFR 205s
Vic Jr int
Solid roller cam (pretty big)

Car made 401rw and ran 11s N/A and drove the piss outta this thing!

The parts I recc. are top quality, known for performing (bolt on and go type), and can easily endure the daily tasks/roadtrips one might throw at it. Keep the cam simple and get a good tune on the thing and you'll be in biz.

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck
Chris

I just built up a 331 short block for my '88 GT:

Ported GT-40 heads
93 cobra intake
10:1 compression
TrickFlow (comp cams) Stage 1 Cam

Although I haven't had it on a Dyno yet, I'd guess 375-400 HP/TQ at the crank - I've toasted many a Hemi Charger and LS-1 that didn't know what they were in for :-D

IT's my DD, and I get 22 MPG on most tanks and as high as 25! (75% highway, 25% city). I commute 65 miles each way to work.

331 is slightly better for reliability (longer piston skirt) and slightly lower piston speed so it handles compression very well (I run 87 octane with 10:1 compression!)

Sure thing :D

My goal for this motor was a strong daily driver that gets reasonably good gas mileage but with enough power to make it fun. I'm more than thrilled with the results. There's alot more power still in it if I want to put down the extra $1,000 to get me there, but I'm pretty happy with it as is.

I started with an all forged 331 short block from M & R Engines for $1,500 and got a set of ported GT-40 heads w/ FRPP 1.6 roller rockers on ebay for about $500. Also got a polished Cobra upper and lower intake (genuine, not the chinese copy FRPP sells now) on ebay for $250. Got the Summit ceramic coated shorty headers for $225.

I'm still using the stock 19# injectors, stock throttle body, and stock MAF (that's the extra 1K I could spend for more performance on the top end of the power band).

I can only imagine what a set of AFR 165 or 185's would do for this combo! As it is, I have no traction in 1st at all, and get completely sideways if I do a hard shift into 2nd. I think I need to invest in suspension and sub frame connectors before I do any more performance mod on the engine LOL.

I went with the FRPP King Cobra clutch and I like it a lot, no problems with holding the power.

Let me know if you'd like any more details :D Here's some pics:

Oh, BTW - just built another 331 using an M & R short block for my mom's 68, Edelbrock Performer RPM power package - and it flat out screams! I'm very happy with the M & R short blocks...and they're relatively inexpensive!

I know, I've drooled over your car more than a few times :-D (It comes right off with a little Quick Detailer LOL). If I recall correctly you also have the Ford Racing polished valve covers as well - looks awesome with that intake.

Good luck on the project and let me know if I can assist in any way :Bucktooth:

I do, and now it needs the new guts, she a little tired after 200,000 miles but that 5.0 is awesome! Considering what it was when I bought it, she turned out pretty nice! Thanks for the comments!

Hey!! No stealing of my idea. :sticktonge:

Honestly, the day they released the new Boss302 Block spec's the first thing that popped in my head. 4.125" bore and 3.25" stroke. BAMM!! Big bore 347. 7000 RPM? No problem.

Now that would be one nasty setup! :woot2: It would bust the 5K budget though
